Wheelback Windsor Chairs

A characterful Victorian elm and ash Windsor armchair, circa 1850 to 1880, in the classic Thames Valley tradition. Each has a gracefully bowed hoop back filled with tapering spindles and centred with a pierced, shaped splat, one carved with a wheel motif and the other with a circle and cross, a lovely detail that shows the individuality of the country chairmaker. The saddle seats are deeply dished and cut from a single piece of elm, with a lovely rippled figure, and the shaped arms are supported on turned uprights. The chairs stand on ring-turned, splayed legs joined by a H-stretcher, giving them a solid and well-balanced stance. While the two are not an exact match, being slightly different in their splat design and proportions, they sit very comfortably together as a harmonious pair, which is a good deal more usual and charming in vernacular chairs than a perfectly matched set. The woods have aged to a deep, glowing, nutty brown with a soft, waxed patina and the seats carry the honest polish of generations of use. Comfortable, practical and full of rustic charm, they would work beautifully at either end of a dining table, in a kitchen, or as occasional chairs in a hall or study. A most appealing pair in good original condition.

All furniture items require FREIGHT SHIPPING or DELIVERY, which is an additional charge based on location and size of the items.
