The deep moulded cornice sits above a pair of glazed doors, each with an arched upper section, opening to reveal adjustable shelving, and flanked by carved scrolling foliate corbels or pilasters that add a lovely sculptural touch. Below, a projecting waist moulding houses a pair of shallow frieze drawers with plain flush handles, above a pair of arched panelled cupboard doors veneered in boldly figured flame mahogany, with the swirling grain carefully chosen and matched across the pair. The whole stands on a deep plinth base, giving it a solid, architectural presence. The mahogany has aged to a rich, deep red-brown with a soft, glowing patina from generations of waxing and polishing, and the carved details remain crisp and well defined. At just under a metre wide it is a particularly adaptable size, ideal for a sitting room, study or dining room alcove, where it offers generous storage below and display or book space above without overwhelming the room.
