The upper rack is crowned by a moulded cornice with a dentil frieze, above a shaped and scalloped apron and three open plate shelves, flanked on either side by a run of small open tiered compartments with arched, shaped pediments, a most attractive detail for displaying smaller pieces of china or pewter. The back of the rack is fitted with a row of three small spice drawers with brass handles, interspersed with shaped open niches. The rectangular base has a good planked top with a moulded edge, above three long frieze drawers fitted with pierced brass batwing handles and escutcheons. The whole stands on square legs, with delicate shaped angle brackets beneath the frieze, and is joined by a generous pot board with a charming shaped, scalloped apron, divided into three open bays that provide display and storage space. The oak has aged to a deep, rich chestnut brown with a soft, glowing patina from generations of waxing and polishing, and the surface carries the gentle knocks and honest wear you would expect of a piece with over two centuries of genuine use. At this size it has real presence, ideal for a large kitchen, dining room or hallway, where it offers a magnificent backdrop for a collection of plates, jugs and treasured china.
