A charming small spindle-back elbow chair, circa 1800 to 1840, in the vernacular Lancashire or North Country tradition, and of particularly appealing scale. The back is formed of two turned uprights with ball finials, joined by a pair of rails and filled with five boldly turned spindles of baluster form. The shaped, scrolling arms sweep down to turned supports, and the whole sits above a rush seat that retains its good old colour and texture. The front legs are turned and finish in neat pad feet, joined by a pronounced swelling stretcher, with plain side and rear stretchers beneath. The ash and elm frame has aged to a deep, dark, almost ebonised brown with a lovely dry, softly polished patina, and the seat carries the wear of honest, long use. Its reduced size suggests it may have been made as a child's chair or a low nursing chair, which adds to its appeal and rarity. A wonderfully characterful piece that would sit happily in a cottage hallway, bedroom or kitchen, or beside a fireplace, and which brings real warmth and a sense of rural history to any interior.
