A charming Victorian stained beech revolving piano stool, circa 1880 to 1900, of neat, compact proportions and very appealing form. The circular dished seat has a softly moulded edge and sits on a threaded screw column, allowing the height to be adjusted by simply turning the seat, a clever mechanism that remains a joy to use. The turned and ringed central pillar rises from a tripod base of three splayed, baluster-turned legs, each finishing in a bold ball foot, and joined by delicate bobbin-turned stretchers that add a lovely touch of detail to the lower section. The timber has been stained to a deep, dark mahogany tone, which has mellowed with age to a soft, glossy patina, and the seat carries the gentle polish and marks you would expect of a piece that has been sat on and enjoyed for well over a century. Made for the Victorian parlour piano, it remains perfectly suited to that purpose, but is equally useful at a desk or dressing table, or as a characterful perch in a hallway or kitchen. Sturdy, practical and full of period charm, a most appealing stool in good original condition.
