A handsome George III mahogany bowfront chest of drawers, circa 1800 to 1810, of well-balanced and very useful proportions. The shaped bowed top has a neat moulded edge and sits above two short and three graduated long drawers, each with a fine cockbeaded surround and fitted with oval brass plate handles and keyhole escutcheons. The drawer fronts are cut from richly figured flame mahogany, with the veneers carefully book-matched across the wider drawers, a lovely touch that shows the quality of the cabinetmaker's work. The canted front corners are inset with reeded quarter-columns, a refined detail that adds interest to the profile, and the chest stands on classic splayed bracket feet with a shaped apron. The mahogany has mellowed to a deep, glowing red-brown with a soft, hand-rubbed patina, and the brasses have taken on a gentle, warm lustre in keeping with their age. The top carries the honest surface marks you would expect of two centuries of use, which only add to its charm and authenticity. At this size it is wonderfully versatile, equally suited to a bedroom, landing, hallway or dining room, where it offers generous storage without taking over the space. Elegant, well proportioned and full of quiet character, this is a most appealing chest in good original condition.
