A neat George III mahogany Pembroke table, circa 1790 to 1800, of narrow, elegant proportions and very useful scale. The rectangular top is flanked by two drop leaves, which can be raised to extend the surface or lowered to leave a slim, space-saving footprint. Below, a single frieze drawer is fitted with a brass swan-neck handle and a simple keyhole escutcheon, and the opposing side is fitted with a dummy drawer to match. The table stands on four slender, square tapering legs in the Hepplewhite manner, giving it a light, upright and quietly graceful presence. The mahogany has mellowed to a warm, deep red-brown with a soft, hand-rubbed patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks and honest wear you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for over two hundred years. With the flaps down it slips neatly beside a sofa or against a wall, and with them raised it opens up to serve for tea, books or a lamp and a few guests at supper. Understated, well proportioned and very easy to place, a most appealing little table in good original condition.
