A fine George III oak chest of drawers, circa 1790 to 1800, of very useful and unusually compact proportions. The rectangular top has a neat moulded edge and sits above two short and three graduated long drawers, each cockbeaded and fitted with oval brass plate handles and escutcheons, with the well-figured, quarter-sawn oak showing a lively medullary ray and a lovely flecked grain across the drawer fronts. The whole stands on classic shaped bracket feet, which give the chest a pleasing sense of lift and a sturdy, traditional finish. The colour is superb, a deep, warm honey-brown with the rich, softly glowing patina that only comes from generations of waxing and handling, and the brasses have mellowed to a gentle, rubbed gold in keeping with the age of the piece. The top carries the honest marks and wear you would expect of two centuries of use, which only add to its charm and authenticity. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally at home in a bedroom, a hallway, a landing or a sitting room, where it offers generous storage without overwhelming the space. Honest, handsome and well made, a most appealing country chest in good original condition.
