A neat oak barley-twist occasional table, circa 1920s to 30s, in the Jacobean Revival taste so popular between the wars, and of compact, very practical proportions. The oval top has a gently shaped, moulded edge and a lovely, lively grain, and sits above a plain frieze on four spiral-turned legs rising from square block feet with small turned toes. A flat undertier of simple form provides useful additional space for books, magazines or a basket, and gives the table a sturdy, well-balanced stance. The oak has aged to a warm, honeyed golden brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks and honest wear you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for the best part of a century. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited beside a sofa or armchair as a lamp table, in a hallway as a display table, or in a bedroom as a bedside table, where it would happily hold a lamp and a pile of books. Solid, decorative and very easy to live with, a most appealing little table in good original condition.
