A charming Victorian bobbin-turned side chair, circa 1870 to 1890, of small, low proportions, in the manner of the bobbin and spool furniture that became so popular in the later nineteenth century. The back is formed of two bobbin-turned uprights joined by a pair of rails of matching form and filled with three slender turned spindles, giving it a lovely rhythmic, almost jewel-like quality. The upholstered seat is covered in a soft floral fabric, which sits very prettily against the dark frame, and rests on bobbin-turned legs joined by a matching turned stretcher to the front. The timber, most likely beech, has been stained to a deep ebonised brown, which has mellowed with age to a soft, dry patina, with the gentle wear and rubbing at the edges you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for well over a century. Its low seat suggests it was made as a nursing or bedroom chair, a delightful and practical form, and it remains wonderfully useful today in a bedroom, beside a fireplace, in a hallway or as a characterful accent in a bathroom or dressing room. Light, decorative and full of Victorian charm, a most appealing little chair in good original condition.
