A fine George III mahogany chest on chest, circa 1780 to 1800, of tall, well-balanced proportions and very pleasing, honest colour. The upper section has a moulded cornice above three short drawers in the top tier and three long graduated drawers below, fitted with brass swan-neck handles and pierced escutcheons, while the lower section has two further long drawers and rests on classic shaped bracket feet. The drawer fronts are cut from well-figured mahogany with a lively, flowing grain, and the cockbeaded surrounds add a crisp and refined finish. The slight step between the two sections is a typical feature of the form, and the chest retains its good original brasses, which have mellowed to a soft, rubbed gold. The mahogany has aged to a deep, glowing red-brown with a rich, mellow patina from generations of waxing and handling, and the surface carries the gentle knocks and wear you would expect of a piece with over two centuries of genuine use. Chests of this type offer an extraordinary amount of storage in a small footprint, and it would work beautifully in a bedroom, landing, dining room or hallway, where its height gives real presence. Elegant, well proportioned and wonderfully practical, a most appealing chest in good original condition.
