A charming Victorian elm and beech stool, circa 1870 to 1890, of the type often called a workshop, library or piano stool, and of very appealing proportions. The circular dished seat has a softly moulded edge and a lovely rubbed surface, and sits above four splayed legs, each turned with bold ring and baluster decoration and tapering to simple, slightly spreading feet. The legs are joined by delicate turned stretchers meeting at a central turned finial, a neat and unexpected detail that lifts it above the ordinary and gives it a light, open stance. The timber has aged to a deep, warm chestnut brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the seat carries the gentle polish and marks you would expect of a piece that has been sat on and enjoyed for well over a century. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally useful at a desk, piano or dressing table, as an extra seat in a kitchen or hall, or simply as a characterful perch or small side table beside a sofa. Honest, well made and full of Victorian charm, a most appealing stool in good original condition.
