A handsome late Victorian oak pedestal desk, circa 1880 to 1900, of compact and very practical proportions. The rectangular top is inset with a tooled leather writing surface, framed by a moulded edge, and sits above a run of three frieze drawers flanked by two pedestals, each fitted with three further drawers, nine in all, with turned wooden knobs and simple brass escutcheons. The drawer fronts are cut from well-figured oak with a lovely, lively grain, and the pedestals stand on deep plinth bases, giving the desk a solid, architectural presence. The oak has aged to a rich, warm golden brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the leather carries the gentle fading and honest wear you would expect of a desk that has seen genuine use. At this size it is wonderfully adaptable, small enough for a study, bedroom or landing, yet with all the storage and kneehole space of a full-sized partners or library desk. Solid, practical and very easy to live with, a most appealing desk in good original condition.
