A very elegant Regency mahogany fold-over tea table, circa 1815 to 1820, of neat rectangular form with softly rounded front corners. The top is finished with a crisp, boldly reeded edge, a refined detail that catches the light beautifully, and it opens on a swivelling action to double in size, revealing a generous surface for cards, tea or supper. The frieze below is clean and well figured, with a lovely rich colour to the timber. The legs are the real highlight: slender, finely turned and ringed in the classic Regency manner, tapering gracefully to brass cappings and original castors, which give the table a light, almost floating quality and allow it to be moved easily about the room. The mahogany has developed a deep, warm russet colour with a soft, hand-worn patina that only comes with two centuries of polishing and use, and there are the gentle surface marks you would expect of a piece with genuine age. Closed, it sits comfortably against a wall as a console or hall table, and open it is perfectly suited to a game of cards or a small dinner for two. Beautifully proportioned, versatile and very easy to place, this is a most appealing table in good original condition.
