A fine George III mahogany bureau, circa 1780 to 1800, of good, useful proportions and lovely, honest colour. The sloping fall is veneered in boldly figured flame mahogany, framed by a crossbanded border and centred with an inlaid oval shell or fan patera, and opens to form a writing surface supported on lopers, revealing what we would expect to be a fitted interior of pigeonholes and small drawers. Below are two short and three long graduated drawers, each cockbeaded and finely strung, and fitted with brass swan-neck handles and pierced escutcheons, while the brass-mounted candle slides or carrying fittings to the sides are a pleasing and practical detail. The whole stands on classic shaped bracket feet, giving it a sturdy and traditional finish. The mahogany has aged to a deep, glowing red-brown with a rich, mellow patina from generations of waxing and handling, and the brasses have softened to a gentle, rubbed gold in keeping with the age of the piece. The fall and top carry the honest marks and gentle wear you would expect of over two centuries of use. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited to a bedroom, study, sitting room or landing as a small writing desk, offering useful storage and a proper place to work without overwhelming the space. Elegant, well made and full of Georgian character, a most appealing bureau in good original condition.
