A charming George III mahogany tilt-top tripod table, circa 1770 to 1800, of neat, square form and very pleasing proportions. The rectangular top has a softly moulded edge and is mounted on a birdcage-style tilting mechanism, allowing it to be tipped to the vertical and tucked neatly into a corner or against a wall when not in use. Below, the turned pillar is of good, crisp baluster form with a bold gun-barrel section above a ringed and vase-shaped knop, rising from a collared base to three gracefully swept cabriole legs finishing in neat, slipper-style pad feet. The mahogany has aged to a warm, deep red-brown with a soft, glowing patina from generations of waxing and polishing, and the top carries the gentle surface marks and honest wear you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for over two centuries. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited beside a sofa or armchair as a lamp table, in a hallway as a display table, or in a bedroom as an occasional table, where it would happily hold a vase of flowers or a pile of books. Light, elegant and full of Georgian charm, a most appealing little table in good original condition.
