A fine early Victorian mahogany writing table, circa 1840, of compact and elegant proportions. The rectangular top is inset with a tooled leather writing surface, framed by a moulded edge, and sits above a pair of cleverly figured frieze drawers fitted with their original turned wooden knobs and brass escutcheons. The real distinction lies in the legs, which are finely turned and tapering, with carved and reeded decoration, a lovely lotus-and-gadroon collar at the top, and a ringed turned foot, all in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. The legs terminate in brass cappings with original ceramic or brass castors, allowing the table to be moved easily around a room. The mahogany has developed a rich, warm colour and a gentle patina through years of waxing and handling, and the leather shows honest signs of age consistent with genuine use. At this scale it is highly versatile, working equally well as a writing desk, a console, or a occasional table in a hallway or bedroom. A very pleasing piece, in good original condition, that would be a welcome addition to any period or contemporary interior.
