A neat Edwardian oak lamp table, circa 1900 to 1915, in the Arts and Crafts-influenced taste and of compact, very practical proportions. The square top has a softly moulded edge and sits above a single frieze drawer fitted with a pierced and shaped brass drop handle of rococo outline. The table stands on four square legs which sweep outwards at the foot in a gentle splay, joined by a lower shelf with shaped, concave sides cut to fit around the legs, a useful and attractive detail for books, magazines or a basket. The oak has aged to a deep, warm brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the lively grain on the top and shelf adds real character. The top carries the gentle surface marks you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for over a century. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited beside a bed as a bedside table, next to a sofa or armchair as a lamp table, or in a hallway, where the drawer is handy for the odd essential. Simple, well made and very easy to live with, a most appealing little table in good original condition.
