A smart pair of Victorian mahogany bedside chests, circa 1870 to 1890, of neat, compact proportions and very useful scale. Each has a rectangular top with a bold moulded edge, above three graduated drawers with applied moulded surrounds, fitted with turned mahogany knobs and brass escutcheons. The chests stand on a deep plinth base, giving them a solid, architectural presence in the manner of the best Victorian cabinet work, and the pair are well matched in colour, proportion and detail, always a desirable quality. The mahogany has aged to a deep, glowing red-brown with a soft, hand-rubbed patina, and the tops carry the gentle surface marks you would expect of a century and a half of honest use. Practical as well as handsome, they offer generous storage either side of a bed, but would work just as well flanking a sofa, in a hallway or as a pair of lamp tables in a study. Solid, well made and very easy to live with, a most appealing pair in good original condition.
