A handsome Edwardian mahogany chest of drawers, circa 1900 to 1910, in the Sheraton Revival taste and of generous, very useful proportions. The rectangular top has a shallow shaped gallery to the back and a crossbanded edge, and sits above two short and one long drawer, each finely strung with boxwood and satinwood stringing and curved corner motifs, and fitted with brass swan-neck handles and inlaid escutcheons. The figured mahogany veneers have been carefully chosen, with a lively, flowing grain across the drawer fronts. The chest stands on square tapering legs, each outlined with fine stringing and finishing in brass cappings and castors, which give it a light, elegant stance and allow it to be moved easily. The mahogany has aged to a rich, warm red-brown with a soft, hand-rubbed patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for over a century. Practical as well as decorative, it would work well in a bedroom, but is equally suited to a hallway, dining room or sitting room, where it offers generous storage and a good surface for lamps and display. Well made, refined and very easy to live with, a most appealing piece in good original condition.
