A delightful Regency mahogany drop-leaf Pembroke table, circa 1815 to 1820, of narrow and very useful proportions. The rectangular top, with its two shaped flaps, has a crisp moulded edge and a rich, even colour, and it sits above a frieze applied with a boldly figured flame-mahogany panel, a lovely detail that shows the cabinetmaker selecting his veneers with real care. Below it runs a neat band of reeded beading, a refined touch typical of the period. The slender legs are turned with elegant ring decoration at the upper section and taper gracefully to ringed collars above brass cappings and original castors, so the table glides easily across the floor. The mahogany has mellowed to a warm, deep russet with a soft, hand-worn patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks of two centuries of honest use. With the flaps down it slips neatly against a wall or beside a sofa, and with them raised it opens up to serve for tea, a laptop, or a few guests at supper. Light, adaptable and beautifully proportioned, this is a very appealing small table in good original condition, with all the quiet charm of a Regency piece.
