A charming Louis XV style walnut fauteuil, circa 1880 to 1920, of elegant, compact proportions and in the French provincial taste. The cartouche-shaped back has a gently moulded frame, centred at the crest with a carved floral motif, and is upholstered in a smart cream, gold and sage green striped silk, which sits beautifully against the warm tones of the timber. The shaped, serpentine seat rail is carved at the centre with a matching foliate cartouche, and the scrolled open arms are fitted with padded armrests and sweep down to curved supports. The chair stands on gracefully curved cabriole legs ending in small scrolled feet, giving it a light, flowing and very feminine stance. The wood has aged to a soft, honeyed golden brown with a gentle, waxed patina, and the upholstery is fresh and clean, ready for immediate use. Chairs of this type were made for the salon or bedroom, and remain wonderfully versatile today, equally suited beside a fireplace, at a dressing table or desk, or as a decorative accent in a hall or sitting room.
