A charming George II style mahogany corner chair, circa 1750 to 1780, of the type often called a roundabout or writing chair, and of very pleasing proportions. The curved, bow-shaped top rail is nicely shaped and sweeps around to form generous arms, supported on slender turned uprights, and centred with a pierced vase-shaped splat of good, crisp outline. The drop-in seat is upholstered in a smart striped fabric, which sits well with the warm tones of the timber. The chair stands on a single cabriole front leg ending in a neat pad foot, flanked by turned legs to the sides and rear, all joined by an X-shaped stretcher of turned form, which gives the piece a lovely, balanced and open stance. The mahogany has aged to a rich, deep red-brown with a soft, mellow patina and a gentle glow from generations of polishing. Corner chairs of this type were made for the library or dining room, and remain wonderfully versatile today, equally at home at a desk or dressing table, in a bedroom, or as a characterful occasional chair in a hall or sitting room. Elegant, comfortable and full of period charm, a most appealing chair in good original condition.
