William Langley (fl.1880-1920) - 20th Century Oil, Cattle Drinking at a the Cottage River

A superb early 20th century oil landscape by William Langley (fl.1880-1920) depicting cattle drinking from a river against a mountainous backdrop. A small cluster of cottages sit beside the river, whilst the mountainside beyond is bathed in light. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.

With tranquil rivers, hazy mountains, and grazing cattle, William Langley's landscapes are serene, harmonious, and timeless.

Artist Biography

William Langley was a landscape painter who worked predominantly in oil and favoured coastal scenes, rural landscapes, and highland views, often featuring cattle. Although little is known about his artistic training and career, his work remains popular to this day. His landscapes have a timeless appeal, presenting an idealised, harmonious view of nature. He is mentioned in Hidden Talents. A dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950 by Jeremy Wood (published 1994): "Painter in oil of rural landscapes and coastal scenes who was working in the early 1900s. The subjects of this prolific artist included views in Cornwall, the South of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Among the titles of known works are 'On the Lledr', 'Wee Bridge, Killarney', 'In the Glen', and 'Sunshine after Rain, a Village in the Thames'. The work shows a distinct similarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym. The pictures are often large and decorative and have become increasingly popular in recent years."

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some craquelure to the surface of the painting and scuffs. The antique frame is beautiful, charming in all its imperfections.
