Artist Biography
Adolf Schill (1848-1911) was a German architect, painter, and designer known for his contributions to the decorative arts and architectural education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Stuttgart, Schill studied at the Stuttgart Polytechnic before continuing his training in Vienna and Munich, where he developed a deep appreciation for historical architecture and classical ornamentation. He later became a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he influenced a generation of artists and architects through his teaching in architectural drawing and decoration. Schill’s work reflected a synthesis of classical design principles with the evolving aesthetics of his time, emphasising craftsmanship, harmony, and historical awareness. In addition to his teaching, he contributed designs for interior decorations, stage sets, and architectural projects.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some craquelure to the surface of the painting and scuffs. The old antique frame is charming in all its imperfections.
