A charming nest of three oak occasional tables, circa 1920s to 30s, in the Arts and Crafts-influenced "Old English" style that was so popular between the wars. The largest table has a generous rectangular top of richly figured oak with a softly rounded edge and a lovely, slightly rustic grain, and it houses two smaller tables that slide neatly beneath it, each graduating in size so the whole group tucks away into a single compact footprint. Each table stands on shaped, serpentine-profile end supports, joined by a simple stretcher rail, giving the group a pleasingly sturdy and handcrafted feel. The oak has acquired a deep, nutty brown colour with a warm, waxed patina, and the surface carries the gentle knocks and tea-cup marks you would hope for in a piece that has been used and loved for the best part of a century. Practical as well as decorative, they are ideal for a sitting room, where they can be pulled out for tea, drinks or books and tidied away again when space is needed. Honest, solid and unfussy, a very useful and appealing set in good original condition.
