A sturdy oak barley-twist elbow chair, circa 1920s to 30s, in the Jacobean Revival taste so popular between the wars, and of good, generous proportions. The tall back is formed of three vertical slats between a plain top rail and a lower cross rail, flanked by barley-twist uprights topped with turned ball finials. The shaped open arms sweep down to matching spiral-turned supports, which continue to the front legs, giving the chair a lovely rhythmic and distinctly architectural quality. The drop-in seat is upholstered in a rich claret velvet, which sits very smartly against the dark timber, and the chair stands on square block feet joined by plain stretchers. The oak has aged to a deep, dark brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the frame carries the gentle wear and rubbing you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for the best part of a century. Comfortable and solid, it would work well as a carver at the head of a dining table, or as a characterful desk or occasional chair in a hallway, study or bedroom. Honest, well made and full of period character, a most appealing chair in good original condition.
