A striking pair of Gothic Revival oak hall or church chairs, circa 1870 to 1890, in the ecclesiastical taste promoted by Pugin and his followers. Each has a rectangular back with a pierced and carved cresting rail of quatrefoil and lozenge motifs, flanked by uprights topped with pointed finials. The panelled back is divided by a cross-shaped framework and centred with a carved quatrefoil roundel enclosing the Christogram "IHS", a charming and distinctly devotional detail. The solid planked seats have a moulded edge and sit above a plain rail with small carved spandrels, on square legs with incised lancet-arch decoration and chamfered feet, joined by stretchers centred with carved rosettes. The oak has aged to a warm, honeyed golden brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the contrasting darker panels give the backs real depth and interest. Well matched in colour and form, they make a most appealing pair, ideal for a hallway or as a pair of characterful side chairs in a dining room, study or bedroom, where they bring a sense of architectural presence and history. Solid, atmospheric and very well made, a most appealing pair in good original condition.
