A neat oak barley-twist occasional table, circa 1920s to 30s, in the Jacobean Revival taste so popular between the wars, and of compact, very practical proportions. The rectangular top has a softly moulded edge and sits above a plain frieze, cut from lively, well-figured oak with a lovely flowing grain. The table stands on four spiral-turned legs, rising from square block feet with small turned toes, and joined by plain box stretchers on all sides, giving it a sturdy, well-balanced and quietly architectural presence. The oak has aged to a warm, mellow brown with a soft, waxed patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks and honest wear you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for the best part of a century. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited beside a sofa or armchair as a lamp table, in a hallway as a display table, or in a bedroom as a bedside table, where it would happily hold a lamp and a pile of books. Solid, decorative and very easy to live with, a most appealing little table in good original condition.
