Henri Vincent-Anglade (1876-1956) - 1897 Oil, View of the Castle

A charming oil study depicting a French town overlooked by a castle on a distant hill. The artist beautifully captures the contrast in light between the narrow provincial streets and the warmth of the dusk light on the castle facade. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with floral strap work and a laurel and berry running pattern. On canvas laid to board.

42 x 37cm (16.5" x 14.6")
Framed Size: 56 x 52cm (22" x 20.5")

Collection Information

Provenance: purchased directly from the artist’s studio sale. These works remained undisturbed in his historic Montmartre-aux-artistes studio, where he lived and created from 1933 onward. The collection has been brought back into the public eye through the efforts of his two granddaughters, who are devoted to preserving and sharing their grandfather’s legacy.

Artist Biography

Henri Vincent-Anglade was born in 1876 in Bordeaux, France. He added his mother's patronymic to his father's to distinguish himself from his brother, the poster designer René Vincent. Vincent-Anglade was a pupil of Gustave Moreau, Fernand Corom and Francois Flameng at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and also Amable Pinta. Early in his career, he became a fashionable portrait painter, mainly of intimate paintings of women. He exhibited in Paris and regularly appeared in exhibitions, especially the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded a distinction in 1903. He was a regular at greyhound and horse races, and was also valued as an animal painter.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some craquelure to the surface of the painting and scuffs. The old antique frame is charming in all its imperfections.
