A very pleasing nest of four mahogany occasional tables, circa 1900 to 1910, in the Edwardian taste and following the Georgian quartetto designs made popular by Sheraton. The rectangular tops are of richly coloured mahogany with simple squared edges, graduating neatly in size so that the whole group slides together into one compact, elegant unit. Each table is raised on slender, ring-turned and baluster-form supports, which give the nest a wonderfully light and airy quality, and each stands on shaped, splayed platform bases of sweeping outline. A turned stretcher rail to the largest table adds a nice finishing detail. The mahogany has developed a deep, glowing red-brown colour with a soft, mellow patina from over a century of polishing, and the tops carry the gentle marks you would hope to see on a set that has been used for tea and drinks over the years. Wonderfully practical, they can be spread around a sitting room when entertaining and tucked away again in an instant, or simply left as a graduated stack beside a sofa or armchair, where they take up very little space. Light, graceful and well made, this is a most appealing set in good original condition.
