A neat mahogany sofa table in the Regency taste, circa 1930s to 1950s, of compact and very practical proportions. The rectangular top has a crisp reeded edge and is flanked by two shaped drop leaves, which can be raised to extend the surface or lowered to leave a slim, space-saving footprint. Below, the frieze is veneered in well-figured mahogany with a pleasing, lively grain. The table is supported on a pair of reeded end standards, each swept into splayed, outswept legs of graceful outline, and joined by a ring-turned stretcher rail in the manner of the Regency originals. The mahogany has a warm, medium brown colour with a soft, gently aged patina, and the surface carries the light marks and wear you would expect of a piece that has been quietly used and enjoyed over many decades. It is a very versatile size, equally suited behind a sofa as a console, beside an armchair as a lamp or tea table, or in a hallway, where the leaves can be raised when extra space is needed. Elegant, practical and well made, this is a most appealing little table in good original condition.
