A charming George III mahogany side table, circa 1790 to 1800, of slender, elegant proportions and very pleasing simplicity. The rectangular top has a softly moulded edge and sits above a single frieze drawer, the front cut from boldly figured flame mahogany and finished with a delicate inlaid ivory escutcheon and a pair of turned brass ring knobs, which add a subtle touch of refinement. The table stands on four slender, square tapering legs, a classic Hepplewhite-period detail that gives it a light, upright and quietly graceful presence. The mahogany has mellowed to a warm, deep red-brown with a soft, hand-rubbed patina, and the top carries the gentle surface marks and honest wear you would expect of a piece that has been used and cherished for over two hundred years. Its narrow footprint makes it wonderfully adaptable, equally suited to a bedroom as a bedside table, in a hallway as a console, or beside a sofa or chair as a lamp table, where the drawer is handy for the odd essential. Neat, well proportioned and understated in the best Georgian tradition, this is a most appealing little table in good original condition.
