A stylish set of four Art Nouveau mahogany dining chairs, circa 1900 to 1910, in the manner of the French and Belgian designers of the period, and of elegant, upright proportions. Each has a tall, narrow back with a gently shaped, arched top rail and sweeping outer uprights, centred with a padded and upholstered panel covered in tan leather and edged with brass studs, a lovely detail that gives the chairs a smart, almost architectural quality. The upholstered seats are covered in matching leather, with the same studded finish, and sit above a plain, neatly shaped seat rail on slender, gently tapering legs that splay subtly at the back. The mahogany has aged to a rich, warm red-brown with a soft, mellow patina, and the leather has taken on a deep, glowing cognac colour with the gentle softening and wear you would expect after more than a century of use. A well matched set of four is always a desirable thing, and these would work beautifully around a small dining or kitchen table, or as characterful side chairs in a hallway, study or bedroom. Refined, comfortable and full of period style, a most appealing set in good original condition.
