A small & sweet Edwardian mahogany bureau, circa 1900 to 1910, in the Georgian taste and of compact, very practical proportions. The sloping fall is inlaid with a boxwood and satinwood wreath within a line of fine stringing, and opens to reveal a fitted interior, with the writing surface supported on a pair of lopers, just visible either side of the top drawer. Below are three long graduated drawers, each cross-banded and strung with boxwood lines and fitted with brass swan-neck handles and keyhole escutcheons. The whole stands on classic shaped bracket feet, giving it a sturdy and traditional finish. The mahogany has aged to a deep, dark red-brown with a soft, mellow patina, and the fall carries the honest marks and gentle fading you would expect of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for over a century. At this scale it is wonderfully adaptable, equally suited to a bedroom, study or landing as a small writing desk, where it offers useful storage without overwhelming the space. Well made, neatly decorated and very easy to live with, a most appealing little bureau in good original condition.
