A charming mid-Victorian mahogany tripod table, circa 1860, of generous circular form and wonderfully sculptural presence. The top is cut from a single well-figured piece of timber with a gently moulded edge, beneath which runs a delightful scalloped apron punctuated by small turned pendant finials, a lovely detail that lifts it above the ordinary. The shapely turned and ringed pillar rises from a carved and collared base, splitting into three elegantly swept cabriole legs, each carved with crisp acanthus leaf decoration at the shoulder and finishing in bold, tightly rolled scroll feet. The proportions are very satisfying, with the weight of the base nicely balanced against the open, airy top. The mahogany has mellowed to a warm, honeyed colour with a soft, even patina that only comes from generations of polishing, and the top bears the gentle marks of age you would expect of a piece with genuine history. Compact enough to sit happily beside a sofa or in a hallway, yet with enough presence to stand alone as a centrepiece, it would work equally well as a lamp table, an occasional table, or displayed with a vase of flowers in an entrance hall. A handsome, solid and very decorative piece in good original condition.
