Thomas Hand (fl.1790-1804) - Framed 18th Century Oil, A Winter's Day
A charming winter scene depicting a family gathered outside their snow-covered cottage, with a female figure in a striking red coat prominent amongst the group. A male figure breaks through ice with a wooden pail to retrieve water for their patiently waiting donkey. The composition employs a muted palette that captures the atmospheric quality of a cold winter's day, with careful attention to the textural details of the thatched roof laden with snow and bare winter branches. Presented in a decorative gilt-effect frame with beaded border and shell ornamentation. Unsigned. Complete with various provenance labels affixed verso. On panel.
19.5 x 30cm (7.7" x 11.8")
Framed Size: 11.8" x 16.1"
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some craquelure to the surface of the painting and scuffs. The old antique frame is charming in all its imperfections.
